Hey Ladies,

Ok so let me just say that my hair has been totally unmanageable lately. I know I joke about it having a mind of its own but one day I can barely get a comb through it and it may take like 20 minutes to detangle and the next day the curls are soft and loose…it’s so strange. Maybe its my diet and the elements but whatever it is I am going crazy. My schedule is too hectic to be dealing with this lol.

So the other night I tried something that I haven’t actually done in almost a year. I used a heat cap for fifteen minutes with this Macadamia oil deep repair masque. I washed my hair, rinsed it, then combed the masque through in medium sized sections from root to tip. My hair was saturated in conditioner. Then I twisted each section up and pinned it with clamps. I put a throw away shower cap (you can also use saran wrap) over my head and then found a comfy place on my couch to work on my laptop. I put the heat cap on my head for fifteen minutes. Once I was done I rinsed it out and put my hair in four big twists to sleep so that it could air dry. When I woke up the next day my hair was so soft and I know it was because of that extra step in the deep conditioning treatment. I really should be doing this once a month. M hair has stayed pretty soft ever since even after washing it again.

If you don’t have the funds for a heat cap you can do these same steps and after you wrap your head in saran wrap just leave it on for thirty minutes instead of fifteen. The heat that penetrates from your head will deep condition your hair too.

Hey Family,

So about two weeks ago I attended this great event in DC called the Fortune 500. And I met Madie at the event and I LOVED the fact that her organization was promoting women’s empowerment and being fab with healthy initiatives. There is so much time spent on fun stuff like celebs and fashion and jewelry and movies etc but we have to also take care of ourselves. I loved it when she said “Once you’ve dreamt it up, break it down into goals, set a timeline, and identify who in your network you can lean on as a resource, pray on it – and then get to work. You may fail, but learn from it and try again.”….so true!!

Madie I wish you the best & look forward to working with you!
xoxo
Ally

She-blogs: Who is Maaden Eshete?
A sister, an activist, a forward thinker, a woman of influence, I’m just M.E.

She-blogs: What inspired you to start your community based organization Divas MPH (Making our People Healthier)?
Divas, MPH was truly the right people at the right time. The organization was co-founded by four young women (myself, Tennille Daniels, Janesia Simmons, and Erica Jeffreys) who wanted to host events to promote healthy living amongst our fellow young woman. Women are the gatekeepers to the community — if you educate the woman on healthy choices you educate her mother, friends, children and her partner.
The name actually came about because we would always say “follow the MPH Divas” on twitter every #FF; the MPH being a nod to our Masters of Public Health degrees. Around that time, we got together to host a documentary premiere for Crisis in the Crib a film on infant mortality in the African American community that two of us had appeared in. The turnout and the response for more events were so great, that we knew what we had to do. We had all wanted to start a non-profit for some time, and we knew then that the moment was just right. And thus Divas Making our People Healthier was birthed.

She-blogs: I know sometimes if something negative hasn’t affected a person or someone they know, it may not be a high priority. Has it been challenging to really get women to be serious about their health?
Women are caregivers by nature. We are quick to listen when it comes to the health of our families and loved ones, but sometimes overlook ourselves. Our mission is to educate and empower women to give themselves that same TLC that they show the ones they love.
Depending on the topic, yes it sometimes is challenging to have the message resonate enough to incite change in behavior. But we’ve worked with a lot of community members with personal testimonies to reach out to our network about issues such as body image, HIV/AIDS, and the loss of a child to SIDS. Hearing those stories and having those discussions first hand has really been a wake-up call for many of us, in addition to the doctors and experts, blog posts, and education information we provide.

She-blogs: So during the day you are a public health analyst for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health. What does your job entail and how did you come into that position?
I work in the Division of Information and Education, DIE (catchy acronym right?). My main responsibilities include transitioning the communications team into the use of social media as a means to reach the people. I work on a number of national campaigns including the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities, and the “A Healthy Baby Begins with You” campaign.
I have worked for the Department of Health and Human Services for a few years in a couple of different capacities but came into this position through my involvement as a volunteer community peer educator in the preconception care curriculum of the Healthy Baby campaign. That work offered me the opportunity to mobilize my community and later to travel the country and train others. I am so energized by the work and the chance to speak to and reach communities of color first hand that I approached the office about a temporary detail to help improve some of the communications strategies for the campaign and, as they say, the rest is history.

She-blogs: What is your average day like?
I wake up. Thank God for waking up. I tweet. I head to work, submit my social media evaluation reports, reach out to community partners seeking to join the National Partnership for Action, talk to my mom everyday at lunch, then jump on a few strategy development calls for maybe the Flu Vaccine push or whatever is happening at the moment. I likely tweet again. I go home and either work on the Divas blog, join a conference call, meet with a venue or community partner (or do all that and then some). I try to cook (depends on the day of the week and what events I may be attending that evening). I make time to call my mentee at least twice a week, she just started high school a couple weeks ago, so she needs that extra attention right now. I chat with my sister or my bestie for a few. Then I take at least 45 minutes to “wind down” with all communication tools off (phone, computer, TV) and brew some Mango Black Tea from Trader Joe’s *yummy* and usually read or journal.

She-blogs: What projects are you working on right now for Divas MPH?
Well… We are working with the DC Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives to promote a Women’s Fall Health Session that’s coming up September 11th, we are also co-hosting a block party and BBQ in Baltimore, MD that afternoon.
We have our one year anniversary fundraiser and appreciation reception on October 2nd at Funxion Lounge downtown DC – Just Be; and with that we will be re-launching our website (Divas 2.0), we just know our Divas will love it! We will also be offering membership in Divas, MPH beginning this fall. And we are super excited about the official launch of Divas, MPH – ATL this fall. This is in addition to our regular monthly events and partnerships. We also have a few surprises coming up around our annual S.O.S. Saving Our Sister from HIV/AIDS Health Summit too, but I’ll have to wait a little bit before I can share those. Just know the summit will be bigger and better and will reach more women and girls in the DMV than we have before!

She-blogs: Tell me about one of the biggest career obstacles you have faced and how you worked through it?
Definitely, working and pursuing my masters at the same time. I really wanted the opportunity to get my “feet wet” in the working world right after completing undergrad. Working was great, and I knew that I liked the field before I went back to pursue graduate study. But by this point going back to school as a full time student was no longer an option. With responsibilities, including a mortgage, I had to work full time and go to school full time simultaneously to finish my degree within a reasonable timeline. I have a busy social and extracurricular calendar too, but I made some decisions and buckled down and got her done in two and a half years. I’m currently taking another “breather” before the next one.

She-blogs: What advice would you give to a woman who is reaching for her dreams? Do you suggest internships or finding a mentor?
I am a strong believer in mentorship. Be a mentor. Get a mentor. In fact, get a couple. I have mentors for all facets of life — spiritual guidance, a career & professional mentor, a financial mentor, and a few others just because. Since all of those things really need to work together in concert for you to be able to follow your dreams. Ask questions, shadow someone that does what you want to do, intern, work for free if you have to, invest in yourself.
My other piece of advice would be to dream BIG. I mean what’s the point of dreaming if it isn’t BIG?! Once you’ve dreamt it up, break it down into goals, set a timeline, and identify who in your network you can lean on as a resource, pray on it – and then get to work. You may fail, but learn from it and try again.

She-blogs: Why do you think it is important for women to stick together and genuinely help one another?
It’s simple, we can accomplish more together than we can alone. Why wouldn’t we support, cultivate, and educate our sisters for the greater good of the community?

She-blogs: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Married, and a mom. Family is everything to me. I would be honored to take on the title of the world’s most important job in the next five years, and that’s motherhood. Let’s hear it for all the women that are responsible for everything we are. Mom’s rock! I would also love to have gotten Divas, MPH to a place of self-sufficiency. It’s our goal to continue to grow and expand to where our work is needed. I plan to travel the world - I want to visit each continent on earth at least once, whether it’s for work or leisure. And I plan to teach – I’m going to start with some community college classes and see what blossoms from there!

She-blogs: Name one place that you have never been that you want to travel to and why?
Bali, Indonesia. I want to experience the serenity and the unadulterated beauty. And I want to go there alone - just me and the water.

She-blogs: What is your mantra on life?
I’ve got two. “Learn, earn, return.” and “Live, grow, give.” Life is all about reciprocal relationships and sowing back into the community.

She-blogs: When was the last time you laughed so hard you couldn’t breathe?
Last night. The funniest and most random things are always happening to me.

She-blogs: What do you do to stay balanced?
I spend time with people I love — they energize me, keeping me laughing and inspire me.
I spend time with myself – I reflect, I write, I think, I cook, I eat, I drink wine, I dance and on rare occasion I just loaf. And spend time with God – I talk to Him, and when I am quiet enough to listen, He talks to me.

She-blogs: What do you like the most about the way you look?
My smile. I wake up in the morning and smile at myself in the mirror every single day. Makes me feel pretty.

She-blogs: What do you like to do for fun?
I love outdoor festivals and music in the summer. Comedy shows, whats more fun than laughing? Traveling to new places. And I love going to brunch! YAY for pancakes, omelets, and home fries!

She-blogs: Is there anything else you want the she-blogs readers to know?
I love to meet new people, and I’ve got the gift of gab – hit me up @miss_madie on twitter, check out our blog at www.divasmph.org or shoot me an email at maaden@divasmph.org Be blessed she-blog fam!! *XOXO*

Hey Family,

So last night I attended the 2nd annual WEEN awards and to say that it was amazing would be an understatement. I will be posting next week with pics and a recap.
I am still BEYOND excited about my feature on Essence. The amazing Tia Brown allowed me to share my thoughts on dating for marriage in her wonderful column “Balancing Act.” To those of you who have read it already and left your feedback, thanks so much….just wanted to share an excerpt for those who didn’t see it. I would love to know your thoughts…

Essence.com “Balancing Act: I Learned How to Date for Marriage”
By Allyson Leak as told to S.Tia Brown

While growing up, I was surrounded by love. My mother encouraged my entrepreneurial spirit. My grandmother sang my praises. My grandfather made sure I felt secure and proud to be me. Though everyone showed me how to love, I never learned how to be in a relationship…so I taught myself along the way. For a long time my dating philosophy was to put everything on the table. You either love me or leave me alone. Unlike a lot of people, I always gave my new beaus a blank slate, which entitled them to 100% of my heart, but if they crossed me… let’s just say there are a lot of deleted numbers in my phone records. That said, I like being in a relationship. Sue me. I love cooking dinner for my man, or hunting for a unique magazine that’s perfect for his favorite passion. I enjoy serving breakfast on Saturday mornings and the early afternoon spooning that’s sure to follow. But I also adore my career.
Despite my propensity to have an omnipresent cuddle buddy, I never let being someone’s “other half” consume me. In fact, I’ve always taken great pride in being that woman who’s equal parts “Cater to You” and “Ms. Independent.” Just when I thought I had it all figured out, life lobbed a metaphorical “not so fast” ball at me. I think I’m finally ready to catch it.

Hello Lovely Ladies,

Recently within the past few weeks there have been a few hurdles that have come up in my life…ya know the reg job stuff…life stuff etc but no matter how crazy things seem(and it can get nuts at times lol), what helps me is just focusing on all the “good” in my life. The fact that I woke up today, have a roof over my head, food to eat, my fam and friends are ok. Thinking about how grateful I am for the basics is what gets me through

Also thinking about all of the great projects and events that are approaching keeps my spirits high too! I am soooo excited about fashion week…I can’t wait. I have these teal blue suede platform knee boots that I am dying to wear. I am also excited because I am planning a she-blogs event in DC soon and am partnering with some other great events in Atlanta & DC etc.

Hey Fam,

I had a good weekend…a few little hurdles to deal with but I forced myself to jump over them lol. Anywho I met Joi at the Diva Lounge event in DC, she was also an honoree. We stayed in touch and I wanted to highlight her and her site because I can feel how passionate she is about what she is doing and where she wants to go.

Joi, you’re a rockstar!
keep up the great work girly

She-blogs: Who is Joi-Marie McKenzie?
I guess my safe answer is “a writer in a socialite frame of mind” but the reality of it is, I’m still trying to figure that out. I’m definitely a writer, a lady who loves the East Coast and a girl who loves drinking Pepsi.

She-blogs: What inspired you to start your site The Fab Empire and can you tell me a little about it?

Inspiration came from boredom. I was an assistant to an editor and didn’t have a creative outlet of my own. So, driving home one day, I told myself to start a blog…I just didn’t know what I wanted to blog about. About a month later I started DC Fab!, a blog about nightlife in D.C. and the idea stuck. I started off by critiquing parties and nightclubs around Washington, D.C. and now it’s evolved into The Fab Empire, where five nightlife experts highlight the best events, parties, fashion shows and hot spots in local cities across the U.S.

She-blogs: Did you write when you were younger and did you go to school for it?
I’ve always kept a diary since I can remember but I was one of those children who would write five pages and then forget I ever started a diary. That was until I discovered Diaryland.com in high school. I’ve kept that diary for seven years and still write in it today. I learned how to be a reporter on the job but I’m finally getting a Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. I should be finished next spring.

She-blogs: I know you cover fab events on your site. How did you get started building your contacts to find out about and be invited to exclusive events?
Well, I started covering parties at nightclubs. I stood in line, paid my way in and blogged about it…that was until people started inviting me to their parties to cover it, which meant no more waiting in line and no more paying (thank goodness!). I got tapped by the Afro American Newspaper to pen my own column about celebrities and nightlife, which gave me more access to fabulous events in DC and my career grew from there. I also started contributing to NBC Washington and I literally had to know everyone and be everywhere…it was great.

She-blogs: Tell me about the coat project and why you started that.
If you walk around DC long enough you’ll see plenty of homeless men and women all the time. I wasn’t used to seeing that many homeless people, living in the suburbs and all, and it pulled on my heartstrings to walk past them each day, especially in the dead of Winter. That’s when the idea of The Coat Project came along where I collected coats to distribute to the homeless. It was a great success thanks to University of Maryland, Metropolitan AME Church and Allen AME Church in DC.

She-blogs: What is your average day like?
Now that I’m in my third week of graduate school, I usually have to make it to class by 9 a.m. (which is hard because I am NOT a morning person). I won’t get out of class until 5 p.m. then there’s a lecture, usually, from 6-8 p.m. Then I head over to an event to see which celebrity I can capture for NY Fab and end back in my apartment on the Upper West Side by midnight only to blog until 2 a.m. and finally go to sleep.

She-blogs: What projects are you working on right now?
We just finished redesigning the Web site, TheFabEmpire.com, making it easier for readers on many levels. I’m also in the midst of planning my three-year anniversary party for DC Fab! Lastly, we’re unveiling our second insider’s guide to Congressional Black Caucus week, one of the biggest weeks in Washington…so I’m definitely keeping myself busy.

She-blogs: Tell me about one of the biggest career obstacles you have faced and how you worked through it?
When I was working at my day job, I feared that if they knew about my freelancing and my blog that they would fire me. Well, sure enough my boss found out when the Washington Examiner profiled my Web site and me. The cat was out of the bag.

At first, they thought it was a distraction. I think it was hard to fathom how I could be committed to them and have another life at night. Still, I remained hardworking during the day and at night and before you know it, I was covering their events as well…and they seemed to forget it was ever an issue.

She-blogs: Why do you think it is important for women to stick together and genuinely help one another?
It’s important because if we don’t support one another, we all fail. Anyone who is ever a great success gets there because of their relationships with other people…you have to remember to cultivate relationships genuinely. The ‘old boys network’ is so powerful because it’s about supporting one another and looking out for each other. I have a group of women (I call them my power four) who I rely on for everything from business advice to contacts to keeping me in check.

She-blogs: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Continuing to live in between Washington, DC and New York City, freelancing at my favorite publications, writing my second book and continuing to build The Fab Empire brand as a resource for young urban professionals.

She-blogs: Name one place that you have never been that you want to travel to and why?
I really want to go to China. It’s a beautiful place that is so unlike the West…I want to go and just experience something that is so unlike what I’m used to. Also, my cousin just opened a nightclub there (Crazy! I know!) and I can’t wait to party there.

She-blogs: What is your mantra on life?
Love, life and the pursuit of happiness. I’m in continuous pursuit of staying happy.

She-blogs: When was the last time you laughed so hard you couldn’t breathe?
Great question…after my sister’s wedding two weeks ago. There were plenty of funny moments that day.

She-blogs: What do you do to stay balanced?
Pray! Thankfully, I know who Jesus is and I pray all the time…especially in still moments whether it’s early in the morning or walking down the street. We ask God for so much all the time but rarely do we give back to him…so I pray, pray, pray.

She-blogs: What do you like the most about the way you look?
My legs! Thanks to my dad they’re incredibly long…it’s my best asset.

She-blogs: What do you like to do for fun?
Relax. I love manicures, pedicures and spa time.

She-blogs: Is there anything else you want the she-blogs readers to know?
Visit TheFabEmpire.com and follow me on twitter.com/dcfab. Lastly, keep supporting women doing wonderful things…it’s the only way we’ll make it to the top! See you there

Disappointed when lotions and creams marketed for dry skin could provide no relief, and fearful of prescription ointments that burned upon application (and had a list of side effects more extensive than the relief they promised), she began to research natural remedies. It was then that she formulated her “Healing Butter” to treat her eczema, and rich, deliciously scented body butters to nourish her skin. In doing so, she discovered her passion for making natural products and began to give some to friends and family. As request and praise increased, she decided to launch N-Diya.

Hey Family,

So I had a wonderful weekend in DC…will post pics from this amazing event this Friday. Today I wanted to do a blog highlight. There is a young lady named Marlena Ortiz who is 25 and diagnosed with breast cancer. She has a site where she writes about her journey and wants to bring awareness that not only can it happen at a young age but that you can use the experience to empower yourself and others. There are over 250,000 women in the USA that are diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40.

I think Marlena is really amazing and truly inspiring. Below is her story from her site:

My name is Marlena Ortiz. I was recently diagnosed on May 09 with stage two breast cancer. My story is a little different from most women that have been diagnosed. I am 25 years old and have no family history of breast cancer. The 1.9cm sized tumor, that was tested positive for cancer, doctors believe, is the same lump that was examined by several doctors over a three year period. My lump had been diagnosed for the first two years as a lymph node, which I was told can happen from breast implants. (Yes, I do have implants but they are not the cause for my cancer). This year’s diagnose was labeled as fibrocystic which I was told is a result of drinking too much coffee. Yes friends, a lump that was visible to the naked eye, at this point was due to too much Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. My doctor, whom I had total faith in says to me “come back in six months and we will take a look at it then”. THANKS OBGYN YOU’RE THE BEST!! All three doctors were convinced that my precious TATAs were only worthy of an examination done by hands and nothing else. Magical hands, Huh? No MRI, No Sonogram, No Mammogram or any other alternative was offered to me because of my age, family history and the best reason of all, health insurance. (Micheal Moore please email me!) That’s right ladies and gentlemen, my life was not worth the cost of a vital and possibly life saving test.

I am sure you are thinking WTF, right? This was something that I could not understand either. Instead of overwhelming myself with Google and web MD, I decided to get the info first hand and “straight from the horse’s mouth”. After consulting with several oncologists and breast surgeons, I would ask them the same question. Have you had patients my age with breast cancer? Everyone said YES! Why didn’t I know this? Why hadn’t the other so called “specialists” tell me this was possible. I then said to myself “Oh, they probably just had a few patients that could have been seeking treatment in N.Y.” (We do have the best cancer doctors). I surely never met nor knew of anyone who knows someone in their twenties who has or has had breast cancer. Just like my other doctor I was Freakin’ wrong.

Once I started to become out spoken about my cancer someone knew someone who knew someone but no one wanted to talk about it. I mean I get that it’s a hard topic but young women need to know that the numbers are growing. If I had not seen another doctor and had waited six months who knows how worse of a case I would have been. I am putting my private story out there so that young women are aware that if they feel something, say something.

Help me spread awareness by following my blunt, witty, sexy, and positive journey as I conquer this battle. Read my diary, see my pictures, and what I learn through my road to recovery. I am doing this while I go through the road to recovery and not after my survival. I want to prove to you that you can kick cancer’s ass and still be the strong beautiful woman that you are.

To read the rest of her story and to check out her updates and spread the word check out :http://marlenaproject.webs.com

Happy Friday Family,

So last night I attended a sneak peak of the Jones Mag Fall 2010 Fashion Issue. They were showing this sneak preview to the media in 30 minute intervals. So when I got their I got a chance to catch the last session at 7:30 moderated by my friend(managing director@Jones) and fellow blogger Jessica Andrews and the editor-in-chief Tracey Ferguson. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS MAG!!! For a few reasons… The first is because of the warm welcome and the down to earth staff. I really appreciate “non stuffy” environments like this because in New York everybody thinks they are somebody and sometimes they have the attitude to go with that thought lol. Tracey and Jessica basically told all of us that they didn’t want to be an “untouchable magazine”. They were open to pitches and ideas on how they could improve or how we could all work together so that everyone benefits. The feeling that I walked away with is that they want thier readers to feel like extended family…it was great! The other reason I love it is because the mag iz just amazing…Its been a while since I looked through a magazine and said “I want that” for something on every page.

Check out the pics below of Veronica Web from their premier issue cover shoot and if you get a moment pick up a copy…lets support good people doing amazing things so that this magazine stays around. I was going to order my subscription last night but was exhausted so I will do it this weekend.

Have a blessed & safe weekend,

Hey Fam,

I wanted to share these pics and the hair video from when Naturi Naughton was getting ready for the red carpet premier of Lottery Ticket in LA. I thought that Johnny Wright ( Artistic Style Director for Softsheen-Carson) did a great job with her curls….

He is right about pin curling right after you finish curling each piece to lock in the curl. I have been doing that for years when my hair is straight to give it more volume and the curls actually last for like two days.

Remember that at night your hairs natural oils will rub off on your sheets etc so it is so important to protect your hair at night. Using a satin or silk scarf/bonnet or even a satin pillowcase is a great way to prevent your hair from getting extra dry.

Enjoy!
