She is uplifting (NY Post-Outrageous)

Ok so as I was checking my facebook messages the other day and I came across a thread that was going around about the “NY Past” cartoon that’s right I said it. Not the “NY Post” but the soon to be “NY Past”. I was mad, sad, hyper, enraged, etc. I ran through a host of emotions. First I was gonna name this post “She is Mad” but I said I will keep it “She is uplifting” because at the end of the day Barack Obama is still the president no matter how many ignorant racist cartoons are drawn or words are said about him.

The bottom line is that this cartoon is racist! I will never buy….read…support The New York Post ever again.

It’s convenient that a chimpanzee was shot a day before so that they can use that to attempt to remove the blatant, not underlying, racism out of the cartoon. First of all why would they even use that as an excuse? A woman gets her FACE BEATEN IN and you are going to create a satirical cartoon about it. Either way this cartoon is offensive to people who feel it’s racist and offensive to people that feel bad for this poor woman and the tragic situation.

UNACCEPTABLE UNACCEPTABLE UNACCEPTABLE

This message is not only to African Americans but to all people who are proud of our new president we CANNOT ALLOW racism to continue.

I have read peoples comments on blogs and some say that people are too emotional. Let me give you a scenario for those who have forgotten, never knew, or have never thought about this. You’ve just got home from work and you are extremely tired from working all day for FREE everyday. You glance outside only to see your spouse hanging from a tree dead, naked and battered. After your heart drops and your devastation sets in you are reminded. Reminded that your daughters are raped on a daily basis even in front of you at times and you work hard all day long every day for no pay and only to receive constant emotional, sexual, and physical abuse from someone who does not even think your human. This is just one scenario amongst many sick, inhumane, and ignorant actions that African Americans endured for 400 YEARS. The blood, sweat, and tears of the African Americans who helped build this country cannot be forgotten. OK PEOPLE I do not believe in dwelling in the past let me just make that clear but I am not in denial that my ancestors have lived and survived though hell on earth and I refuse to let anyone come anywhere near poking fun at it without me voicing my opinion and making a fuss.

INITIAL RESPONSE FROM THE NY POST EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Col Allan, editor-in-chief of the Post:

“The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

NOW late last night the NY POST said this:

“THAT CARTOON”

Wednesday’s Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday’s police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp’s body: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill,” one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

NOOOOO NY POST Allyson Marie Leak does not accept this apology. It is not sympathetic and was obviously forced. They don’t want to loose ALL their advertisers and many readers so someone advised that they apologize. First of all just the title of the so-called apology “That Cartoon” shows that they are still being jerks about the situation. And even at the end when they say “sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon” shows that this is not a REAL apology.
I want the Post to publish an apology that acknowledges that it was a HUGE mistake for the Post to publish this cartoon. I want them to determine what editor was responsible for this and I want them fired. Yes Fired yesterday!!

Honey I’m MAD with ya! I had to fight back some very very HOT tears of anger!!! I called the post and said some very unlady-like (NASTY) things, slamed down the phone (broke a nail!) then tried to write a letter. It wasn’t legible, so I had to make myself calm down so I could do this thing right. Hands still shaking slightly from anger, I ended up having to type my letter. It should be there by now I think. I wonder if they’ll respond. I’m still mad.

    PS Melanie

I did see your comment and accidentally spammed it. These stupid spammers…urghhhh. Just wanted to let you know feel free to leave it again if you want I won’t spam it this time LOL ;) And this goes for anyone else who may have posted a comment and possibly didn’t see it. Every now and then I get a gazillion spam comments and I just go down the list clicking and I accidentally spam a “real” comment…

Arlice, I totally feel your pain but I am glad you calmed down and got a chance to write your letter. 2000 people showed up here in NY to protest outside of the NY Post and that says something. The best was to be effective is to remain calm, strategize a plan on what to do, and ACT so you’re already on the right track already.

    xoxo
