She is beauty (Beauty Detox)

Just reading this image I created is exhausting. Think about all of the things that some of us go through to make ourselves “feel” better. Many of us (some men included) have become image obsessed and it is not healthy. The world of beauty with all of the manicures and eye shadows and facials is really a wonderful thing and should be enjoyed but should not be obsessed over or needed to feel good about yourself.

Beauty Detox

OK ladies so here is the deal I am sure you have heard of detoxing your body to remove nasty toxins that can cause cancer and a whole host of other health related problems. I was walking last night from my car and it hit me. BEAUTY DETOX. All of this great info just started flowing so I rushed inside to start typing.

A beauty detox is the same concept as a body detox but is very different.
Beauty detoxing is getting rid of some of the mental toxins that dictate how we feel about ourselves. Getting rid of these mental toxins over time will be a rejuvenating experience and I know first hand. For example, I used to get relaxers and I used to cringe when my “new growth” used to grow in. I would actually feel sick on the inside and I would be obsessing for a touch up to straighten my roots. It took me years of getting to really know myself to realize that I didn’t need that. And it wasn’t easy. Now if you get relaxers and you are not a slave to them meaning that you don’t feel like you “have” to have them to survive in life but the only reason you may get them is for some manageability with your hair then that’s different. Another example is someone who can’t live without makeup. That’s a problem. It’s one thing if you are fully secure and just use makeup for pure enjoyment and because it’s pretty and not because you will die without it. So I think that we wake up everyday and go about our daily lives not even realizing that we have some serious beauty obsessions, most of which are really unhealthy.

It is ok to enjoy the beauty world but it’s not ok when you feel like you have to have it or else. When you feel amazing on the inside you won’t “need” anything on the outside.

THE POINT OF A BEAUTY DETOX:

To identify if there are any beauty obsessions and to start a pattern of breaking them.
To take steps to loving “every” part of the “real” you.

Now I know that this is not easy. It is easier typed than done LOL but baby steps are a great start.

PHASE ONE

A. Start by making a list of all of your beauty habits. Painting your nails, weekly hair appointments, applying makeup etc.
B. Then make a list of the ones that you adore and that make you “feel” great.
C. Then decide on a plan.
Plan one is to detox for a weekend. Plan two is to detox for a week. Plan three is to detox for a month.
D. After you have decided what are your beauty “must have” routines/products and which plan you will be on then you are good to go.
E. Now to prepare for day one of your beauty detox you must put all of the things you will do without in a small box. If that includes the business card for your hair salon then so be it LOL. Place the box under your bed or in a closet or even better at a friends house so that you won’t have any access to it.
F. Start your beauty fasting and be observant of your behavior while fasting. Are you constantly talking about the stuff in your box? Are you making excuses about why this is dumb?
G. After your number of detoxing days are up journal about your experience. Did you have emotions about not having on foundation? Were you sad because you couldn’t get your hair done and had to wear it in more of a “plain” style than usual?

OK folks I am in no way saying that you should walk around town looking a hot mess and scaring small children. You can still be cute and groomed with filed nails and clean skin but you just can’t have those ad on’s because the real point of the detox is for you to identify if you have beauty obsessions.

Now if you realize already or decide to test it out and you find that you are not obsessed then more power to you. But if you do find that there are a few beauty regimens that you are a slave to and you don’t want to be anymore then you can start phase two if you wish.

PHASE TWO

Ok this is the part where you get on a serious plan to loving everything about your physical body but of course that starts inside your head. Now don’t get scared but this phase may take 2 months for some and five years for others and that’s OK. One of the best ways to fall in love with the real you is to find out who that is first. Let me remind you that whether you know it yet or not you are a phenomenal being of light, love, and happiness that was put here as a unique expression of the divine power that makes up all existence. You are amazing and every cell, hair, bone, and organ on your body was detailed and designed specifically to make you who you are.
Ways to loving the REAL you.
• Affirmations EVERYDAY! If you need to buy a book or look some up on the Internet then do what you have to do but these are essential in personal growth. You could do different affirmations or the same one everyday until you actually believe it. One that you can start with is “ I am perfect. My body is perfect. My mind is perfect. My health is perfect. I am divinity uniquely expressed. I love everything about my body”
• Trance(meditation). The best way to love everything about yourself is to know who you really are first because once you know who you really are then you fall in love with yourself. Going into trance…being still and breathing properly will allow you to become one with the life force that connects all things. The more you do this, the more you will not only love your physical attributes but you will also remove blockages and gain more insight into how to improve every aspect of your life. Now again I will say that this is not easy but it’s better to start somewhere. It takes practice. In order to still your thoughts you must develop the right breathing techniques and while there are many you can start with this one. When starting a meditation you should always sit upright and you should breathe in (expanding the stomach) and breathe out slowly(but slightly contracting the abdomen). You will notice that soon after all distracting thoughts will slow down and eventually cease.

Just some food for thought,
xoxo
Ally ;)

Thanks darling, I needed this. My latest beauty obsession is makeup and hair. I’ve bookmarked every hair and makeup blog you can think of trying to imitate what I see. I definitely need to detox and give myself a break and just be me.

This is an awesome post. I know from some advice you gave last year, I stopped getting perms every month. Instead, I now get my hair pressed with the intention of only getting a perm every 8 weeks. Only, I haven’t had to get a perm at all since I followed your advice and made the comittment to give my hair a break. I still cannot believe it’s going on 5 months! My hair looks good like I’ve had a perm, my hair is stronger and healthier and I’m happy about that.

    ~Ally,
GREAT POST! Being a Beauty consultant, I truly understand where you are coming from. However, I recently stop perming my hair. It’s been about 5 months now….and my natural curly hair has truly blossomed. I love it! I have to send you a pic side bar. Also, I gave up getting my nails done. Wearing gel or acrylic nails can be a burden on your natural nail bids. I am happy and satisfied with my natural nails. Not to mention…SAVING extra money by doing so. Thanks for sharing.
