She is Inspiring

Hey Ladies,

Hope your Monday is off to a good start ;)
I am so lucky to know so many great women and to sit on the WEEN planning committee. That’s how I met Midwin. We went to dinner one day and I found out we have the same birthday, I knew there was a reason we got along so well lol. Anywho she’s pretty dope! A lawyer, TV Personality, and soon to be author! :)

Midwin keep up the amazing work girly!
xoxo

She-blogs: Who is Midwin Charles?
Midwin Charles is constantly evolving.  I like to think of myself as the embodiment of the American Dream. As a first generation American, my hard-working Haitian born parents encouraged me to excel in school, follow my dreams and just be me. After graduating from Syracuse University, I began law school at American University Washington College of Law. I went on to clerk for a federal judge, do a fellowship at Harvard Law School and work at a large law firm — all the things I was supposed to do.  I got to that firm, after years of planning, and realized that it was not the end all be all.  Worse yet, I had no Plan B.  Many conferences and networking events later, I realized that working as a legal analyst on television and being my own boss was my next step.  I jumped, with no parachute, and founded Midwin Charles & Associates LLC, a boutique law firm that services an array of corporate and private clients and now work as a Legal Contributor for In Session on tru TV (formerly known as Court TV).

She-blogs: What inspired you to want to be a lawyer?
My desire to help others while being financially secure was cemented when I watched the classic 80s TV show, LA Law. The show sparked my initial interest in law, no doubt aided by watching the adorable Blair Underwood week after week!

She-blogs: You are extremely successful! How did you land the opportunity to be a Legal Contributor for In Session on TRU TV?
That was a combination of tenacity, timing, hard work and a great agent!  Once I chose to pursue a career in television, I pitched myself for every opportunity and provided commentary for a variety of networks for five years.

She-blogs: What is your average day like?
No two days are exactly the same, which keeps things fresh! Typically, I start at CNN where I do the live show, In Session on tru TV. When taping is over I may head downtown for a court appearance or head to my midtown office for a client meeting. There are occasions when I have to head back to CNN for more tapings, either HLN’s Showbiz Tonight, Prime News or The Joy Behar Show. On evenings when I’m not taping, I can usually be found at a networking event or client dinner. Lately, I’ve been traveling across the country speaking to women’s groups and entrepreneurs about pursuing professional passion.

She-blogs: Tell me about one of the biggest career obstacles you have faced and how you worked through it?
My decision to leave an established firm to launch Midwin Charles & Associates was a big leap of faith. There is a tremendous amount of pressure working for yourself, but I believe the rewards outweigh the stress. Similarly, pursuing a career as an on-air television personality is daunting, but I’m finding my way and learning many valuable lessons about the industry in the meantime. I’m a work in progress.

She-blogs: Why do you think it is important for women to stick together and genuinely help one another?
As hard as it is to imagine women still earn 70 cents to every dollar a man makes! The only way to forge ahead and change things is by doing it together. We cannot allow ourselves to become distracted with petty nonsense. I believe women understand each other and when we come together to support each other instead of tear each other down, the possibilities will be limitless.

She-blogs: Where do you see yourself in five years?
My dreams change weekly, however, five years from now I envision many of the seeds I’ve planted becoming realized. That includes a regular role on a network television show, the publishing of my book and of course a thriving law practice. It’s good to be flexible though and see exactly what the universe is presenting.

She-blogs: Name one place that you have never been that you want to travel to and why?
Must I pick one?  Istanbul, Turkey.

She-blogs: What is your mantra on life?
Live out loud and ignore discouraging “noise” from others. People will always have something to say about what you do, so do what makes you happy!

She-blogs: When was the last time you laughed so hard you couldn’t breathe?
Did you catch that dancing Brazilian baby on YouTube?  I think I fell off my chair laughing so hard.

She-blogs: What do you do to stay balanced?
Ah, finding balance is something everyone struggles with; I’m no exception. I find Yoga is a great way to connect the mind, body and spirit. Now if only I could get to class as much as I would like.

She-blogs: What do you like the most about the way you look?
The fact that I look like my mom; she’s the most beautiful woman I know!

She-blogs: What do you like to do for fun?
I truly enjoy opera, art, theatre and international travel. I also enjoy fashion.  But most importantly, I relish spending quality time with my family and friends.

She-blogs: Are you Happily single or Happily in love?
Neither (laughs)…

She-blogs: Is there anything else you want the she-blogs readers to know?
Dreams do come true but you have to work for them every day. Life is full of challenges but I’ve never felt more alive and plugged into the world.  I love the journey!
