Judith Ortiz Cofer: Understanding a Writer
Judith Ortíz Cofer came to be in Hormigueros, Puerto Vasto in 1952. She grew up on the island and in Paterson, Nj, before her family finally settled in Augusta, Atlanta. She received her B. A. in English coming from Augusta College in 1974, and her M. A. in English language from California Atlantic College or university, and did graduate school at Oxford University in 1977 (Judith). Her series of poems include The 12 months of Our Innovation: New and Selected Reports and Poems (1998), success of the Paterson Book Award given by the Poetry Centre at Passaic County Community College; The Latin Deli: Prose & Poetry (1993), winner with the Anisfield Wolf Book Honor; Terms of Survival (1989), Reaching for the Mainland (1987), and Latin Women Hope (1980) (Judith). Cofer is likewise the author of essays. Her young adult book, A great Island Like You: Stories from the Barrio (1996) has received The American Collection Association Reforma Pura Belpre Medal and the Fanfare Best Book from the Year merit. Other literature that Cofer has drafted are The Type of the Sun, Noiseless Dancing, Girl in Front of the Sun- On Being a Writer, and The Line of the Sun (Miguela). Cofer's awards and honors incorporate grants in the Georgia Council for the Arts and the Witter Bynner Groundwork, and fellowships from the Countrywide Endowment intended for the Arts to get poetry, the University of Georgia Humanities Center, the Bread Loaf Writers' Meeting, The Sarasota Fine Disciplines Council, as well as the Janet Grain Memorial Fellowship from Fl Atlantic School. She is the Franklin Professor of English language and Imaginative Writing at the University of Georgia, and an associate employee of the Breads Loaf Writers' Conference (Judith).
