You will find two main parents from this novel: Atticus Finch, dad of Search and Jem, and Bob Ewell, daddy of Mayella Ewell. They may be contrasting heroes; Atticus is mostly shown being a decent person with great morals, and a good father, whereas Ewell is shown to be selfish and a bad dad.
One of the main reasons Atticus makes a great parent is the fact he doesn't show off, which is modest; for example when the children find out Atticus was 'the deadest taken in Maycomb County in his time', this individual doesn't gloat about it, plus the fact that the youngsters had hardly ever discovered this before implies that Atticus feels it is trivial. This term 'courteous detachment' shows that he isn't the type of father who tries to have an input in everything they are doing, but lets them expand up making their own decisions and blunders, so whenever they reach adult life they will be well prepared. Scout detects her daddy 'satisfactory', yet doesn't claim whether this really is enough on her.
